10^th Mountain Division Association Announces Scholarship Awards for the 2023-2024 Academic Year

The National Association of the 10^th Mountain Division Association announces the 2023 recipients of the 10^th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) Scholarship.  Twenty-six individuals were selected to receive a total of $60,000 in scholarship funds for the 2023-2024 Academic Year.  The National Association of the 10^th Mountain Division, Inc.’s Scholarship program was established in 2006; to date it has awarded one-hundred and sixty scholarships totaling more than $600,000 to current or former members of the 10^th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) or their immediate family members.

Ciao, we are a non-profit association run by volunteers which deals with historical research.
We are producing the docufilm “The Lost Mountaineers”, telling the story of the twenty-five American soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division who drowned in Lake Garda, near Torbole, when their amphibious boat (DUKW) sank on April 30,1945. The story of these twenty-five young men is not very well known, but telling their tale will hopefully give solace and some closure to their families, many of whom are in contact with our organization Benàch. In order to pay tribute to these men and have their story told, we want to have a version of this docufilm in Italian and English. By doing so, we will be improving the quality and integrity of the experience while watching it.

Ciao, siamo un’associazione di volontari che si occupa di ricerca storica. Stiamo realizzando il docufilm “The lost mountaineers” che racconta la storia di 25 soldati americani della Decima Divisione da Montagna annegati nel lago di Garda vicino a Torbole sul Garda il 30 aprile 1945 nell’affondamento del loro mezzo anfibio. La storia di questi 25 giovani uomini è poco conosciuta e raccontarla darà conforto alle famiglie (con alcune siamo in contatto) e permetterà di dar loro l’estremo saluto. Per rendere onore a questi soldati e far conoscere di più la loro storia vorremmo realizzare una versione del docufilm in italiano e in inglese per migliorare la qualità e l’intensità della visione.

The National Association of the 10th Mountain Division Association announces the 2021 recipients of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) Scholarship.  Twenty-six individuals were selected to receive a total of $55,750 in scholarship funds for the 2020-2021 Academic Year.  The National Association of the 10th Mountain Division, Inc.’s 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) Scholarship program was established in 2006; to date it has awarded one-hundred and thirty-two scholarships totaling $543,250 to current or former members of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) or their immediate family members.

This year’s recipients are:  

• Claudia Deters, Cincinnati, OH, will receive $5,000 to pursue an undergraduate degree at either Miami Ohio University or University of Tennessee
• Hunter Czajkowski, Calcium, NY, will receive $4,000 to pursue an undergraduate degree at SUNY Brockport
• Kayla McDonald, Tobyhanna, PA, will receive $4,000 to pursue an undergraduate degree at University of West Virginia
• Ethan Jones, Carthage, NY, will receive $3,500 to pursue an undergraduate degree at undecided
• Maria Gross, Lebanon, PA, will receive $3,000 to pursue an undergraduate degree at Lafayette College
• Serafina Philbrick, Watertown, NY, will receive $3,000 to pursue an undergraduate degree at Highpoint University
• Rachel Ball, El Paso, TX, will receive $3,000 to pursue an undergraduate degree at John Brown University
• Adam Evans, Batavia, OH, will receive $2,000 to pursue an undergraduate degree at University of Cincinnati
• Patrick McGloine, Schuylerville, NY, will receive $2,000 to pursue an undergraduate degree at St Michael’s College 
• John Dell’Olio, Leesburg, VA, will receive $2,000 to pursue an undergraduate degree at Ohio State University
• Nicole Flacinski, Hopewell Junction, NJ, will receive $2,000 to pursue an undergraduate at Rutgers University 
• Andrew Eichhorn, LaFargeville, NY, will receive $2,000 to pursue an undergraduate degree at Alfred State University

• Ryan Young, Tampa, FL, will receive $1,250 to pursue an undergraduate degree at University of Colorado Boulder
• Brianne Conaway, Wellesley Island, NY, will receive $1,250 to pursue an undergraduate degree at St Lawrence University
• Lauren Myer, Cape Girardeau, MO, will receive $1,250 to pursue an undergraduate degree at SE Missouri State University
• Cassidy Marino, Fort Myers, FL, will receive $1,250 to pursue an undergraduate degree at University of Florida
• Hailey Swanson, Orange Park, FL, will receive $1,250 to pursue an undergraduate degree at Florida Institute of Technology
• Katherine Lorusso, New Orleans, LA, will receive $1,250 to pursue an undergraduate degree University of Mississippi

The 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) Scholarship program is part of the many scholarships awarded annual through the Northern New York Community Foundation, Watertown, NY.  The scholarship amount ranges from $5,000 to $1,250 based on merit and is available for full-time undergraduate and /or technical school students; graduate study is not funded.  To qualify to apply an applicant must be a current or former 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) Service Member or assigned to one of its affiliated units and/ or an immediate family member.  The applicant must also be a member of the 10th  Mountain Division Association.  Applications are available at https://www.nnycf.org/scholarships/applications/ or https://10thmtndivassoc.org/ in early January of each year and are accepted through April 15th.

Participants: The Living History Display Group will provide the military support during the ceremony. Our keynote speaker this year will be Major General Brian Mennes from Fort Drum, who will join us virtually. We will continue the tradition of profiles of the fallen with a brief reading in honor of a member of today’s 10th Mountain Division.

Wreaths: As in the past, five wreaths will be placed at the base of the monument representing the core and tenant organizations. Again this year we will abstain from Chapter wreaths in the interest of the necessary reduction in visitor count.

Lunch: Due COVID and the virtual nature of the ceremony, we will not be hosting a luncheon at Ski Cooper. We would ask that you remember all of our veterans and friends as you have your main meal this Memorial Day.

It is important that we honor our fallen comrades and those who have left us since the war’s end. We urge you, your family and friends to watch the video when we post it on our Facebook page, YouTube and our website at https://10thmountainfoundation.org/. We will be sending out notices regarding the posting of the ceremony video.

We anticipate a return to our traditional ceremony in coming years. Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we stay safe during this pandemic.

Scholarship awards are for full-time undergraduate study, including technical school, and range
from $2,000 to $5,000, and are for one-year. Scholarships for graduate study is not available.
Applications are accepted until April 15, 2021 and awardees notified no later than July 15, 2021.
Prior scholarship recipients may apply.

To qualify, applicants or their sponsors must be a be a member of the 10th Mountain Division
Association and a current or former member of either the 10th Mountain Division (LI); the Army
National Guard Mountain Warfare School; the 3rd Bn, 172nd Inf Regiment (Mountain); the 1-157th
Infantry Mountain, Colorado Army National Guard; the 86th Brigade Combat Team, Vermont
Army National Guard; or family member (spouse or child) of one of these units. Proof of service
with one of the units listed above is required.

Interested students may apply through the Northern New York Community Foundation at
https://www.nnycf.org/ or though the link on the Association’s website at
https://10thmtndivassoc.org/. Applicants must first complete the NNYCF’s common application
to get to the 10th Mountain Division (Light) Scholarship portion of the application.
Last year the Association awarded $52,500 in scholarship funds to twenty-two applicants. Since
2004, the Association has awarded a total of $487,500 in scholarship funds to one-hundred and
ten applicants.

Annual Remembrance Ceremony

The Annual Remembrance Ceremony, will be conducted with limited local attendance (the COVID-19 limit for outdoor events that is in place at the time).  The Goldstar families will not be in attendance.  The CMD group will lay the wreath and then deliver a speech.  The Chaplin will give a benediction and the Band will play taps.  The PAO will film and livestream on the Division Facebook page

10th MTN Warrior Legend Hall of Fame

The 10th Mountain Warrior Legends Hall of Fame, will be conducted with limited local attendance (the COVID-19 limit for outdoor events that is in place at the time). The inductees and families will not be in attendance.   The plaques for each inductee will be on display, the command group will deliver a speech, and individually introduce and give the background for each of the 14 inductees.  The PAO will film and livestream on the Division Facebook page

As you’ll see on the trip brochure, we are offering a pre-trip visit to Normandy France to see the D-Day landing beaches, inland drop zones, the Normandy American Cemetery, and the beautiful Norman villages and countryside. As is our custom, our Main trip will begin in Florence and will follow the 10th’s combat and post-war route through the hill towns to Lake Garda and on to present day Slovenia.
